Mary Anne Steele, 83, residing in South Bend, IN; passed away Wednesday evening, July 18, 2018 in her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born July 31, 1934 in South Bend, to the late Eugene & Leah (Leman) Zimmer, and has remained a lifelong resident. She was a 1952 graduate of James Whitcomb Riley High School, and graduated in 1956 from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She spent 40 years as a Registered Nurse working at Memorial Hospital for 23 years, and for Dr. Howard Engel for 17 years, retiring on July 31, 1997.
On February 3, 1963 at First Christian Church, South Bend, as Mary Anne Zimmer, she was united in marriage to Thomas E. Steele. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage until his passing on May 5, 2017. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Eugene “Nick” Zimmer on Sept. 18, 2008, and William Zimmer on Sept. 28, 2014.
Mary Anne is survived by her three daughters, Jennifer & Robert Conley of Carmel, IN; Rachel Gabler of South Bend, and Lisa Steele, of Mishawaka, IN; and seven grandchildren, Abbi Conley of Fukushima, Japan; Nathan Conley of Carmel, IN; Emily Steele of Mishawaka; Caleb (Taylor) Gabler of Anderson, IN; Benjamin, Micah, & Leah Gabler all of South Bend.
Mary Anne was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, and belong to the Berean Sunday School Class. Most of her adult life, she enjoyed serving as a children’s Sunday School teacher.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 23, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 So. Michigan St., South Bend, and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Tuesday.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Trinity Evangelical Free Church, 61770 Miami Rd., South Bend. Rev. Steve Meck will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Bremen Cemetery, Bremen, IN.
