Mary Louise (Viau) Houle, 81, died peacefully on May 6, 2022. She was born on December 8, 1940, to Edward R. and Evelyn L. (Perow) Viau of Dearborn, MI. Mary Lou graduated from Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit in 1958. She attended Henry Ford Community College and she graduated from Aquinas College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in mathematics and minoring in chemistry. She stayed in Grand Rapids and taught seventh- and eighth-grade mathematics and general science, and she met her beloved husband Art Houle through mutual friends. They went downhill skiing on their first date. They married on October 3, 1964 and they shared 57 years of marriage, 3 children and their spouses, and 8 grandchildren. While raising her children, Mary Lou helped Art build their business Armar Marketing.
Mary Lou believed that a life of service is a life well lived. She was a member and volunteer of the Christ Child Society for more than 40 years providing warm, winter clothes and books for children who needed them. In addition, she re-started the Funeral Lunch Ministry at St. Anthony de Padua Church and co-chaired this for 20 years, expressing God’s love to mourning families through hospitality. She was also a volunteer tutor at St. Anthony’s grade school believing every child could learn in their own way.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband Art Houle of South Bend, IN. She is also survived by her children Beth Houle (David Pope) of Oak Park, IL; Cindy (Rich) Krupp of South Haven, MI; Tom (Melanie) Houle of Williamsburg, VA. She leaves behind 8 grandchildren: Elise and Vivienne Pope; Margaret, Alex and Brian Krupp; Sam, Sarah and Kate Houle.
She is survived by sister Lauralee (Thomas) Schmitz of Caledonia, MI; sister-in-law Sue-ann Viau of Novi, MI; sister-in-law Mary Houle (Jack Workman) of Port Lambton, Ontario. She was preceded in death by her sister Shirley (Viau) and brother-in-law Joe Siler; brother Michael Viau; sister-in-law Margaret (Houle) and brother-in-law Russ Hazzard; sister-in-law Ann (Houle) and brother-in-law George Douglas; brother-in-law Bob Houle. She also leaves many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, many of whom she relished holding as babies, spending time with them and watching them grow.
The Houle family extends their gratitude to the numerous friends, neighbors and caregivers who helped care for Mary Lou in the final years of her life. They have been loving friends.
The family will host a Visitation and Rosary on Friday, June 10, 2022 from 4-8pm located at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park, 2528 E Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, IN 46615. Mass will be on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11am at St. Anthony de Padua Church, 2310 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46615. Palmer Funeral Homes – River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
