Mary Lou Manthay Obituary

Mary Lou Manthay, age 91, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022. Mary Lou was born on June 17, 1931, in Manitowoc, WI to Constance (Glysch) and Peter Rysticken into an established family that included three brothers and one sister. Mary Lou is survived by her husband Vernon Manthay of Granger IN, her son Mark and daughter Joyce, both of South Bend. She was preceded in death by her daughter Susan (Shawn) O’Brien and son Gary. She was the affectionate grandmother of twins Kate and Kieran O’Brien.

Mary Lou married Vern in 1955 and moved to South Bend where they raised their family. She was talented at sewing and cooking for her family and others, eventually employed as a baker for the South Bend Community School Corporation. Generous in her donations to the church and the community, Mary Lou had a charitable heart and spirit.

Mary Lou was a wiz at crossword puzzles and was a voracious reader. Her sense of humor was lively and occasionally goofy. Along with Vern, she enthusiastically watched the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame football. She also loved the many German Shepherd dogs in her lifetime.

At her request, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022 followed by interment at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame, IN 46556.
