Obituary

Mattie Flowers, 92 was born to the union of John and Mary Washington-Dixon in Macon, Mississippi on December 24, 1930, and both preceded her in death.

Mattie attended school in Macon Mississippi.  She received Christ at an early age and attended Hopewell M.B. Church in Macon, Mississippi before relocating to South Bend, Indiana in 1955.

Mattie met Isadore Flowers and they married in July of 1961.  To that union she was blessed with five sons, Wayne Flowers, Dennis Patterson, John E. Lenoir, Raymond Patterson, and Billy Ray Flowers; and daughters, Sarah Holloway and Joyce Jackson.  Mattie’s sons, Wayne and Billy Ray, and her daughter, Sarah, preceded her in death.

She joined New Hope M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor Willie V. Williams, she later joined Antioch M.B. Church and was a faithful active member until her health began to fail.

Those who remain and will cherish her memory are her sons, Dennis Patterson, John E. Lenoir; and Raymond Pattertson,  daughter, Joyce Jackson; brother, Willie B. Dixon of South Bend, IN;  grandchildren, Tanya Flowers of Nashville, TN, Nichole Flowers, of Indianapolis, IN, Veronica (Larry) Perkins (Tickfaw) of Louisiana, Lovell (Collette) Flowers of Anderson, IN, Carl Johnson, Minister Donnetta Flowers, Reva Flowers, Donald Flowers, Jr., Darnell Flowers all of Hammond, Louisiana, Vivian (Ron) Strickland, and Margaret Holloway; sixteen great-grandchildren; five great-great children; and a host of exceptional nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mattie and her sisters had a love for singing and organized a group called the Gospel Aires.  The group is well known thought out the Michiana area for singing and praising the Lord.  Mattie was the last founding member of the Gospel Aires under Local 30-2 Quartet Union and remained an honorary member until death.

Two of Mattie’s favorite songs was “I’m on the Right Road Now., and “I Thank You Lord.”

Mattie was preceded in death by her parents John and Mary Washington-Dixon, her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Gwen Flowers; son, Billy Ray Flowers; daughter, Sarah Holloway; three sisters, Katie Beasley, Nellie Rice and Nancy Thorpe; two brothers, Tyson Dixon and John Wesley Dixon; two nephews, Murphy Cotton, and Robert Cotton; two nieces, Phyllis Chandler and Nancy Halbert; and a special friend Marie Burkes who was also a member of the Gospel Aires until her death.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 6, 2023, in Pilgrim Baptist Church, 116 Birdsell St., South Bend, Indiana, 46628.  Friends may visit beginning at 10:00 A.M. in the Church.
