Maxine V. Hammons

Maxine V. (McNeely) Hammons, 104 years old, passed away peacefully on
Wednesday March 13, 2024 at Holy Cross Rehab and Wellness in South Bend.
Maxine was born on November 11, 1919 in Marmaduke, Arkansas to the late Herbert and Anna
(Watson) McNeely.

Maxine worked as a punch press operator and welder for Raco, retiring after 25 years. She was
a faithful member of the American Legion #360 Auxiliary for 41 years, serving as a past
president.

Maxine was feisty, resilient, and giving, but most especially a loving mother, grandma, great-
grandma and friend to all those who knew her. You could always count on her for a warm
blanket or a warm southern meal of fried rabbit, fried chicken and biscuits and gravy.
She participated in the March for Life with her grandson and was so proud of her great-
granddaughter when she represented her school in the March of Life in Washington D.C. She
was devoted to the rosary and she wore it as a necklace to be sure she wouldn’t lose it.
Maxine is survived by her son; Paul (Darlene) Hammons of South Bend, 8 grandchildren, and
many great-grandchildren. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her children; Charles Hammons, Dee Hammons Jr, Barbara Evans, Sandra Aker, and Phyliss Hoviak.

Memorial visitation for Maxine will be held from 10:00am-11:00am on Friday March 22, 2024 at St.
Jude’s Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Rd. South Bend. A mass of Christian burial will begin
at 11:00 am with private burial to follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
