Michael Ray Helman

Michael Ray Helman, age 64, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on August 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on May 29, 1962, in Mishawaka, Indiana, and lived a life marked by devotion, hard work, and deep love for those closest to him.

Michael was the beloved husband of Julie (Trowbridge) Helman, with whom he shared more than 43 wonderful years of marriage. They were united in marriage on April 30, 1983, in South Bend, Indiana, and built a life together centered on family, loyalty, and enduring companionship. He was a devoted father to Sarah (Tim) Ruszkowski and Aaron (Ashley) Helman, and a proud grandfather to Danica, Evan, Colton, Addison, Olivia, and Clara. His grandchildren brought him great joy, and he treasured every opportunity to attend their activities and cheer them on. He is also survived by his father, Donald “Larry” McCartney. He was preceded in death by his mother, Delora (Bishop) McCartney, and his sister, Deana Helman.

Michael graduated from Mishawaka High School with the Class of 1980 and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in labor relations. He carried the values of education, perseverance, and responsibility throughout his life and career. For more than 20 years, he served as the chief union steward for Clark Food Service, where he was respected for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to the people he represented. He later spent roughly 20 years with Coca-Cola Consolidated as a Bulk Account Manager, retiring after a long and successful career. In every role he held, Michael was known for his strong work ethic, steady presence, and ability to connect with others.

Outside of work, Michael enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life meaningful. He loved watching the Chicago Cubs and followed them with enthusiasm. He enjoyed playing fantasy baseball and found great enjoyment in disc golf. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his family. His love for Julie was the foundation of his life, and his devotion to his children and grandchildren was evident to all who knew him. He was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved, and his family will forever remember his kindness, humor, and unwavering support.

At this time per Michael’s wishes, there will be no services. Palmer Funeral Home – Bubb Chapel is honored to be assisting the family with final arrangements.
