Minas “Mike” Matheos, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2023 in Granger, Indiana. He was born on October 26, 1933, in Karpathos, Greece.
Mike was a man of great strength and determination, who brought a piece of his homeland to Indiana in the many restaurants he owned. He was best known for Mike’s Restaurant in South Bend. His establishment became a cherished community hub, where he served traditional homemade American dishes with a side of his warm and welcoming personality. His dedication to his work was only surpassed by his love for his family and his commitment to his community.
On July 17, 1957, in Angola, Indiana, Minas married the love of his life, Barbara J. Erhardt. Their union was blessed with four children: daughters, Engeline (Jeffery) Beyer of South Bend and Mary (Kevin) Rudynski of Markleville, Indiana, and sons, Mitchell (Susie) Matheos of Knox and Nicholas Matheos of South Bend. Minas was a devoted father who instilled in his children the values of hard work, love for family, and respect for their Greek heritage. Minas was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Fay Pittas.
His love for his family was evident in the joy he took in their accomplishments and the pride he felt in their growth. He enjoyed fishing and boating, and new cars, but his greatest joy was time spent with family cooking and entertaining those he loved.
