Nina Postle Obituary

Nina Montgomerie Postle  1921-2022
….passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at her home in South Bend, Indiana, surrounded by family.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, John E. Postle, daughter, Judith Vanderheyden, grandson, John A. Vanderheyden, great grandson, Joshua Vanderheyden, son-in-law, David Hendrix, grandson, David M.Hendrix, parents, Hugh and Dorothy Montgomerie, and brother, Ralph Montgomerie.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1921 and, at an early age, moved with her family to South Bend. She attended Riley High School and MacMurrary College in Illinois. In 1940, she married the love of her life (affectionately called “that little bit of heaven from the south”). They spent several years in Toledo, Ohio before returning to South Bend where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Nina is survived by her children…Barbara Hunting (Fritz) of New London, New Hampshire, Nancy Hendrix of South Bend, John Postle (Kathy) of Granger, Indiana, Pam Hill (Robert) of Dallas, Texas and son-in-law, Tom Vanderheyden of South Bend. In addition, she is survived by 9 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

During her life, she was involved in many civic and charitable organizations. However, other than her family, she reserved a special affection for golf and the University of Notre Dame. As a teenager, she was an early member of the Western Women’s Golf Association (WWGA) and traveled widely to participate in tournaments. And Saturdays always found her in front of the television set cheering for the “Fighting Irish”, clad in her ND sweatshirt.

She loved clothes and was never without the appropriate “costume” for any occasion. For her, flying “carry-on” was an impossibility. She also adored her son and sons-in-law with whom she could…and did…spend hours talking about sports.

As the mother of 5 children, she exemplified extraordinary parenting, kindness, patience, support, humor, and grace. Among the many lessons she taught was (and remains) the importance of giving back to one’s community, to be generous with time, and to always be conscious, in the moment, and grateful. For 100+ years, she was a force, a Renaissance woman, and a woman to be emulated. She will be forever in many hearts.

The family wishes to thank her caregivers for their incredible help these past few years. They are among the most marvelous and caring people imaginable.

In lieu of flowers, a gift in her memory to the Cathedral of St. James (117 N. LaFayette Blvd.#1507, South Bend, Indiana 46601) or Hospice of South Bend (501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, Indiana 46545) would be wonderful.

And, of course, a resounding cheer for Notre Dame would certainly be appreciated and appropriate.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the Cathedral of St. James, 117 N Lafayette Blvd #1507, South Bend, IN 46601. Friends may visit with family from 10:30am until the time of service.  Palmer Funeral Homes – Welsheimer North Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
