Paul Tracy Obituary

The Reverend Paul John Tracy passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 15, 2025, in Notre Dame, Indiana. He was 93.

Born August 8, 1932, in Caldwell, Idaho, Paul was the son of Walter and Lottie Tracy. He devoted his life to faith, service, family, and community.

Father Tracy is survived by his sons, Richard Tracy and Timothy Tracy; his grandchildren, Henry Tracy and Maya Tracy; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Shrewder Tracy, and his siblings Judith, Joseph, Marjorie, and David.

He studied at the University of Idaho, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958, and at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1961. He later received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1985.

Father Tracy served parishes in Fort Hall, Salmon, Payette, and Weiser, Idaho. In 1981, the Tracys moved to Indiana to pursue graduate studies at Notre Dame. He later served as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mishawaka, Indiana, until his retirement in 1995.

A proud United States Navy veteran, Father Tracy remained a lifelong supporter of veterans and took great pride in his service.

He was an avid reader and loved books of all kinds. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making toys for his children and their friends, and found peace working in his garden. He and his wife, Sarah, loved to travel together until her death in 2009.

Father Tracy was known for his kindness, good humor, and willingness to lend a hand. He will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Margaret’s House, South Bend, Indiana.
