Philip Ashton Obituary

Philip G. Ashton, 96, of South Bend, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Memorial Hospital.  Philip was an amazing man who loved his family more than anything; Grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him love, joy and great pride.

Phil was born September 26, 1924 in Glassport, Pennsylvania, to James and Julia (Goshio) Ashton.

Phil graduated Glassport High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 (World War II), and proudly served his country until  honorably discharged in 1946.  His service included duties in the pacific theater of operations.  He often said he would do it again if called.

After service he graduated from Duquesne University with a bachelor’s degree in 1950 on the G.I. Bill.  He then began his career at The Associates, relocated to South Bend, where he retired as Assistant Vice President after more than 40 years.

On July 5, 1958 Phil married Mary Benedict in Lewis Run, Pennsylvania.  They enjoyed sixty-two years together. 

Surviving is his wife, Mary of South Bend, and their children, Phil (Pam) Ashton of Lakeville, and their children, Mike, Christi, Brittany, Hannah and Chloe; Jules Molica of Lakeville, and her children, Paul, Adam and Renee; and Fran Ashton of Indianapolis.  Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Genny, James, Ryla, Ellie, McKenzie, Nicholas, Norah, Camden and Carson.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, James and Julia Ashton; sister, Edna R. Ashton; brother, James Ashton; and a nephew, James Ashton.

Phil was active in many civic and community activities and projects including Junior Achievement, YMCA Indian Guide Program for area boys, United Way, Christmas in April.  He was a regular blood donor.  Phil was a Paul Harris Rotary Fellow, and a charter member of the South Bend South Rotary Club.  He was a life member of VFW Post 15015, a 31 year member of  the American Legion most recently South Bend Post 0303, and the NRA.

Per Phil’s request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
