Richard E. Burgess Jr., 81, of South Bend passed away surrounded by his family on July 15, 2022.

Dick was born December 17, 1940 at Saint Joseph Hospital in South Bend to Richard E. Burgess Sr. and Eleanor K. Flanigan Burgess and lived most of his life in South Bend.

He met his wife Jeanne M. (Lawler) Burgess at the National Bank & Trust of South Bend where they both worked. They were married at St. Patrick Catholic Church in South Bend on September 3, 1966. When Jeanne passed away in 2013, they were married for 47 years.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his children Ellen Coleman (James), Laura Winslow, Joseph, Andrew, and John Burgess, all of South Bend and his grandchildren Genevieve Coleman, Cody, Scott, Derek, and Amanda Butler, Emma Winslow, Abigail and Edward Burgess, and his great-grandchildren Anthony, Adrianna, Gabriel, Luke, Diana, Ronnie and JJ. He is also survived by his sister Beverly Fiskaali of Florida.

He attended Riley High School, Indiana University South Bend, and the University of Notre Dame du Lac.

Dick was a career auditor for over 30 years with the University of Notre Dame, comptroller of the currency at the National Bank & Trust of South Bend. He was active in the American Institute of Banking, Institute of Internal Audit, Association of University and College Auditors, and the Big 10 Audit Managers.

He served in the U.S. Army at the U.S. Hospital of Augsburg, West Germany and visited many countries in Europe.

His interests included history, politics, and literature, classical and jazz music, baseball, walking among the birds, trees, and flowers, but most of all attending the activities of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Per his wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation services. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Center for Hospice, 501 Comfort Place Mishawaka, Indiana 46545. Palmer Funeral Homes - Guisinger Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
