Richard Melvin Penland, 89, of Buchanan, Michigan, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
Richard was born February 9, 1936, to Alice and Howard Black. He graduated from Galien High School. Later in life, he pursued college coursework, continuing his love of learning. He was a lifelong resident of the Galien–Buchanan area.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Before his service, he briefly dated Kay Barbara Ross. After returning home, they reunited and were married on July 25, 1970, beginning a marriage that lasted until her passing in 2018. Richard and Kay were longtime members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Buchanan.
Richard built a long and steady career at Clark Equipment Company in Buchanan, working in the copy center for 32 years until the Buchanan facility closed. He then began a second career at Walmart in Niles, where he worked in the Electronics department for 20 years. He took particular pride in caring for the movie displays—a fitting role for someone whose favorite pastime was watching films.
Richard was a true people person, known for his warm presence and easy conversation. He was a friendly, loving, and supportive father and grandfather, and often joked that he was “just a big kid.” He loved Disney, cartoons, and animated movies, and had a special fondness for the classic Disney characters—especially Mickey Mouse.
He adored dogs of all kinds, but his beloved Boots held the top spot in his heart. He also had a well-known sweet tooth and often enjoyed dessert first—whether a bowl of ice cream or a serving of peach cobbler—because, as he would say, if he ate dinner first, he might not have room left and would miss out. Christmas was his favorite holiday, and family members made time each year to take him for drives to admire neighborhood Christmas lights. From the smallest displays to the grandest—he found them all beautiful.
He is survived by his daughter, Nikki Wyatt (Dennis) of Niles, Michigan; his grandchildren, Midas Wyatt (Shawn Tucker Jr.) and Dominic Wyatt; and his brother, William Black (Marilyn) of Pullman, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Kay.
Richard will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan in a private ceremony. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
