Richard "Dick" Klitzke, P.E. Obituary

Richard “Dick” Lyle Klitzke, P.E., age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Center for Hospice Care in South Bend, IN. He was born on July 1, 1929 in Whitewater, WI, to Lyle K. and Genevieve (Smith) Klitzke, both of whom preceded him in death.
 
Dick married the former Doris Elaine Anglin on July 8, 1951 in Nappanee, IN. In addition to his wife of 66 years, Dick is survived by daughters, Jan Sallander of Northbrook, IL, and Kay (Dr. J. Scott) Aiello of Downers Grove, IL; son, Dr. Alan (Susan Cordes) Klitzke of Buffalo, NY; grandchildren, Amanda Sallander of Chicago; Adam Wanezek of Chicago; Michael (Amanda Boleyn) Sallander of Chicago; Steven (Nina LeBorgne) Sallander of Chicago; Allison Wanezek of Sun Prairie, WI; Megan Wanezek of Elmwood Park, IL; and Robin Klitzke of Fort Collins, CO; sister, Carol Mahoney of Rochester, MN; nieces/nephews, Melinda (Gary) Kotterman of San Jose, CA; Laura (Dr. David) Martin of Rochester, MN; and William Mahoney of Rochester, MN.
 
Dick was a professional civil engineer for several architecture and engineering firms throughout his career. He retired from Cole Associates in 1991. After retiring, he continued his career with his own consulting company, Richard L. Klitzke, P.E.
 
Dick graduated from Nappanee High School in 1947, and Purdue University in 1951 with a B.S. in civil engineering as well as Master of Structural Engineering in 1958. He played sousaphone in the Purdue marching band. Dick was an avid sports fan and had been known to spontaneously sing the Purdue fight song.
 
Dick served his country honorably in the Marine Corps at Cherry Point, NC. He worked on the missile at North American Aviation in the early 1950s in California. He went to China as part of the people-to-people program with American Concrete Institute. Dick was a member of the choir of Grace United Methodist Church, and he enjoyed four European choir tours. In addition to music, he enjoyed bridge (Silver Life Master), bowling, cribbage, and six-handed family euchre. He cherished his grandchildren and family.
 
Memorial services for Dick will be at 1:00pm on Monday, March 26, 2018 at Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 Twyckenham Drive, South Bend, IN. Rev. David Schrader will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00am-1:00pm on Monday prior to the service at the church.
