Robert R. Lawson “Lawdog” ,69, a lifelong resident of St. Joseph County, passed away on Monday March 30, 2026, at his home following a lengthy illness.
Robert was born on November 2, 1956, in South Bend to Harold and Maxine Lawson.
Robert graduated from Riley High School and directly enlisted into the Marine Corps where he served for 11 years before receiving honorable discharge. He attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and spent his career with the St. Joseph County Police Dept. He retired in February 2016 after completing a 30 year career as an officer. Robert served in patrol, drug enforcement, and a supervisor of the Street Crimes Unit. In 2002, he received the highest award the SJCP offers; the Medal of Honor, for his actions in response to a mass shooting incident at Bertrand Products in South Bend. He was a member of the County Police Honor Guard.
After retirement, he continued working as a Special Deputy serving papers for the Civil Division.
Robert had interest in some history, anything military, and guns. He loved spending time with his buddies hunting or just giving them trash talk. He made friends everywhere he went and loved spending time with his family.
Robert is survived by his wife, Roxanne (Hayden) of 25 years, and children; Marcy (Paul) Lyzun, Robert Lawson, Teresa Hayden, and Jeremy Lawson as well as 4 grandchildren and his sisters; Kathi Ginter and Sue Rajski.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Patsy Derickson.
Services for Robert will be private.
