Robert Lee Smith, “Bob” or “Smitty” to his family and friends, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend and respected professional, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, in Mishawaka, Indiana. Born on September 2, 1954, in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Robert Smith Sr. and Bertha "Bonnie" (Duff) Smith, Robert's early life with his parents and brother John “Mickey” Smith was filled with the warmth and values that would come to define him.
A proud graduate of J. Frank Dobie High School, Class of 1973, Robert pursued the military after high school, serving in the U.S. Navy. After his time in the Navy he found his passion for safety in the workplace, as evidenced by an impactful 18-year tenure as a Safety Director with the Levy Company. There, he not only enforced standards but also nurtured a culture of care and responsibility.
Bob had an adventurous spirit with a passion for fishing and car racing. A competitor in his late teens and 20s, Bob avidly participated in fishing tournaments, earning several titles. After stepping away from competition he kept his passions alive, teaching his children and then grandchildren how to fish, and taking his family to local race tracks. Bob also kept his competitive spirit alive coaching his children in several sports and traveling to cheer on his son as he competed in college. As his grandchildren got into athletics Bob traveled to watch as many of their events as he could.
Inspired by lessons learned from his father, Bob found joy in tinkering and fixing anything that needed repair. Anytime family or friends had something that needed repairing Bob was their first call.
Bob’s legacy continues through his beloved family, daughter, Samantha (Nathan) Schuller, and son, Scott (Brittany) Smith, will forever carry his teachings in their hearts. The light of his life, his four grandchildren, will grow up hearing legendary tales of their grandfather's adventures. His brother Michael "Mickey" Smith, will continue to celebrate Robert's life.
A Celebration of life will be held at a later date. Palmer Funeral Home – Bubb Chapel is honored to be assisting the family with final arrangements.
