Robert H. Waechter

Robert H. Waechter, lovingly known as "Bob" and affectionately called "UB" by family and friends, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at the age of 96.

Born on April 2, 1930, Bob was the eldest son of Anne Christman Waechter and Herman F. Waechter. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John E. Waechter. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Waechter Good of Traverse City, Michigan, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, dear friends, and extended family members who loved him dearly.

Bob graduated from John Adams High School in South Bend and attended Northwestern University. Throughout his career, he held positions at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Notre Dame, The Associates Corporation, and several other organizations, primarily in personnel and public relations.

While Bob was proud of his education and career, those who knew him best will remember him for his generosity, his wonderful sense of humor, and his genuine love of people. He found joy in life's everyday moments and loved nothing more than sharing conversations with family and friends. He had a remarkable ability to make people laugh simply by finding the humor in ordinary life.

For generations of nieces and nephews, Uncle Bob was simply always there. He was a constant presence in the lives of those he loved, generously sharing his time, support, and friendship. He showed up not only for family, but also for the many friends who adored him.

Bob had a thoughtful way of letting people know they were remembered. Those who knew Bob never knew when they might find a box of Kroger donuts on their doorstep, receive a thoughtful card, or be surprised by a visit from him. These simple gestures reflected the kindness and generosity that defined his life.

He loved family gatherings and became famous for his legendary "Irish goodbye," quietly slipping away while everyone else was still visiting. In later years, family and friends came to cherish Uncle Bob's unforgettable text messages. Usually written in ALL CAPS and filled with emojis, they were often hilarious, occasionally mysterious, and always entertaining. Whether sharing an observation, a thought, or simply checking in, his messages never failed to bring a smile and perfectly reflected his unique personality.

Bob never sought recognition for the many lives he touched. He simply gave of himself freely and expected nothing in return. His kindness, humor, generosity, and unwavering presence left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

If you knew Bob, you likely have a story about him, a thoughtful gesture, a meaningful conversation, a box of Kroger donuts, or one of his unforgettable text messages. Those memories are his gift to all of us.

The world is a little less colorful without Uncle Bob. He was truly one of a kind and will be forever loved, remembered, and deeply missed.
