Roberta "Bertie" L. Eck

Roberta (Bertie) Eck, 80, of South Bend, Indiana passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at her home.
Bertie worked as a secretary in the insurance industry for much of her adult life. She then managed the Scottsdale Mall location of the Leather Banana for many years, and continued to work for the business until her recent retirement. She loved listening to many types of music, and singing, as well as re-learning how to play the piano up until the time of her death. Spending time at Lake Michigan was also one of her passions, and she was an enthusiastic Chicago Cubs fan.
Bertie treasured spending time with her family and friends. This was the foundation of her loving, kindhearted and generous spirit. They brought her special joy, which propelled her positive outlook and willingness to help others. Bertie never met a stranger; she knew many people, built long-lasting friendships and was the life of the party. She was fun-loving, had a great sense of humor, and could also always be counted on to lend an ear or console those in distress. Her caring nature and zest for life was, and will continue to be, an inspiration for many.
Bertie is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Steve Smith) Smith-Eck of South Bend; her son, Douglas (Amie Neff) Eck of Palo Alto, CA; her grandchildren, Olivia, Samuel, Brittany, Hannah and Chloe; and her brother Michael (Chris) Leippert of South Bend. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Eck.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held within the next few months, and will be published in the South Bend Tribune.
