Roberta "Elaine" Seward Obituary

Roberta Elaine Seward, known affectionately to friends and family as Elaine, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, in South Bend, at the age of 71. Born August 8, 1954, in Memphis, Tennessee, Elaine was the beloved daughter of Warren Martin Sr. and Liddy Ann Young. Her warmth, generosity, and friendly nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.

On July 14, 2012, Elaine was united in marriage to Victor Seward in South Bend, a union marked by deep companionship. Victor preceded her in death on February 13, 2024.

Elaine's life was a testament to the love she had for her family. She was a devoted mother to her daughters, Antoinette Matlock, Michelle Washington, Crystal Merriweather, and Tosha Phillips, and to her son, Michael Phillips. Her life was enriched by the joy and challenges of motherhood, and she embraced every moment with grace and humor. Though grief touched her life with the loss of her brothers, Warren Martin III, Tony Buntyn, and her children Tracy Young, Tamakia Johnson, Dell Young, and Tacuma McMorris Jr., Elaine's strength and resilience were an inspiration to all.

She is survived by her loving sisters, Monica Dickerson, Seletha Martin, and her brothers, Ronald Buntyn, and Shaune Martin. Each of them carries forward the legacy of Elaine's kindness and the memories of her unwavering support and love.

Elaine's professional life was characterized by her dedication and hard work. She served as an Administrative Assistant at the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC), where her colleagues respected her for her efficiency and her ability to make everyone feel welcome. Elaine's work ethic and her genuine care for others made her a cherished member of the SBCSC community.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Elaine had a passion for connecting with people. She brought joy to many as a bartender at the Why Not Shack, where her generous spirit and friendly demeanor made her a favorite among patrons. Elaine's ability to listen and her ever-present smile turned first-time visitors into regulars and strangers into friends.

Elaine's interests and activities reflected her love for life and her desire to be of service to others. Her involvement in various associations allowed her to extend her generosity and friendliness beyond her immediate circles, touching the lives of many in the broader community.

Those who knew Elaine will remember her for the love she shared so freely and the positive impact she had on the lives around her. Her legacy of generosity and friendliness will live on through the countless stories and memories cherished by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her.

As we bid farewell to Roberta Elaine Seward, we celebrate a life lived with an open heart and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of others. Her spirit will continue to inspire us, and her memory will forever be a beacon of light in the lives she touched. Elaine's departure from this world leaves us with a profound sense of loss, but also with deep gratitude for having known such an extraordinary person.
