Rodney W Shields

Rodney William Shields, a man known for his analytical mind, witty gallows humor, and selfless service, passed away on March 18, 2024, in Mishawaka, Indiana. Born on September 26, 1952 in South Bend, IN to Wilber “Bill” Shields and Ruby (Shawver) Shields, Rodney’s life was full of adventure, dedication, and family.  

A proud veteran, Rodney served his country valiantly while overseas during his two tours of Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning multiple awards and honors, including a Bronze Star. At home, Rodney was a dedicated husband, father, and friend. Always quick with a joke and a sly smile, he was a constant source of laughs and great conversation to those around him. Rodney’s knowledge was vast and his wisdom was sharpened from years of unique experience.  

Rodney is survived by his loving wife, Judy Shields (Hembrecht); his children, Rodney W. (Stacy) Shields II, Randa (Kevin) Adams, and Ryan Shields; his siblings, Gloria (Joseph) Cook, Sandra Eberhart, and Roger (Becky) Shields; and his six grandchildren, Robert, Jade, Emily, Sylvia, Andra, and Elizabeth; and his two great-grandchildren Gabriel, and Lillian. He was preceded in death by his sister, Billy June.

Rodney was a leader by example in this world, and his legacy is one of service, wisdom, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday March 22, 2024, at Palmer Funeral Home - Bubb Chapel, where friends may visit with the family beginning at 10:00 a.m., burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may also visit with the family from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Thursday March 21, 2024.
