Ronald Keith Benjamin passed away on March 15, 2026. He will be remembered as a hardworking, loyal, and devoted family man. Ron was born in Niles, Michigan, and grew up in humble circumstances alongside his sisters, Barbara and Teddie. He graduated from New Carlisle High School, where he met Nancy Jo, his wife of nearly 60 years.
After high school, Ron served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany in the late 1950s. His service took him overseas. His time in the Army marked an important period of growth and perspective early in his life. Following his service, he returned home, married Nancy Jo in 1961, and together they raised two daughters, Jackie and Cindy. Ron spent much of his career in blue-collar work, including at Drewry’s Brewery. He took pride in providing for his family and built a life centered around them.
He was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football and made attending games a cherished family tradition. For his grandchildren, going to Notre Dame games—and hearing the “Victory March”—will never feel quite the same without him. He was also a devoted fan of the Chicago White Sox and had the unforgettable experience of attending Game 2 of the 2005 World Series. Separately, Ron was a constant presence at his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events. He rarely missed a game and was often the first one in the stands, no matter the sport or the weather.
In retirement, Ron devoted his time to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, continuing to support them in the same way he always had—by being there. He will be remembered for his commitment to his family, his strong work ethic, and the countless moments he spent showing up for the people he loved.
Ron was preceded in death by his Father Robert Benjamin, his mother Maxine (Spenner) Benjamin, and his wife Nancy Jo Benjamin (Coughlin). He is survived by his sisters Barbara Hickman (Howard) and Teddie Jelinek (James) and his children Jacqueline Stout (Darren) and Cynthia Wheeler, as well as his five grandchildren. Aron (Cally), Erin (Theodore), Benjamin (Abigail), Jack and Cole. He also had seven beloved great-grandchildren, Daegan, Alyenna, Creegan, Madeline, William, Mia and Matilda.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, Indiana. A memorial service will begin at 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
