Mrs. Ruby M. Manley, 85, passed away peacefully at Holy Cross Care and Rehab on the late morning of Thursday, January 23, 2020. Ruby was born on August 5, 1934 in Coffeyville, KS to the late Euhula and Lillie (Ferris) Allen.
Ruby moved to South Bend in 1972 and was united in marriage to Maurice E. Manley in November, 1973. Maurice preceded Ruby in death in September of 2005 after 32 years of marriage. Ruby obtained her CNA license while working at Michael Reese Hospital of Chicago, IL and later worked at Northern Indiana Children’s Hospital until it’s closure. Ruby continued her career as a cashier with The Kroger Company, retiring after 14 years of service. She then transitioned back to healthcare, focusing on in-home healthcare for many years.
She was a member of Olivet AME Church for over 30 years and later, Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, as well as a member of Leisure Ladies and Red Hat Ladies society. Ruby loved interior design, fishing, traveling, cooking and hosting the perfect gathering.
Ruby was a beloved mother, grandmother, extended family member and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Left to cherish Ruby’s memories are daughters Denise Mitschelen, Sharon K. Manley, Jean A. Gosa-Dill, Bilynda (Adrian) Murray and a daughter-in-law, Connie McCarter; as well as eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Ruby was preceded in death by two children, Stanley M. McCarter and Kennetha Y. McCarter, three siblings, Shirley M. Gaiter, Levi D. Allen and Freddie Allen, as well as beloved brother-in-law Benjamin Gaiter.
Services for Mrs. Ruby M. Manley will be held on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 12:00 PM at Palmer Funeral Homes – West Chapel, 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend, IN 46628. Friends may call on the family for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Pastor André McGhee to officiate. Entombment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
