Ruth S. Kirkland

Ruth “Sue” Cuskaden Kirkland, 78, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2023, in New Carlisle, Indiana. She was born in Laporte, Indiana, to the late Robert R. and Ruth A. (Peer) Cuskaden.  Sue married Gordon “Scotty” Kirkland, in one of their favorite vacation destinations, Las Vegas, Nevada, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughters and son: Ron’a (Chris) Cushman and Rita Mattison; and Laura (Dennis) Alexander and John (Terri) Kirkland. Sue's legacy will continue to shine through her eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  Additionally, she leaves behind a sister, Iona (Bealor) Gring.  She is preceded in death by her siblings: Robert L. “Bob” Cuskaden (for whom she had held a special bond); Joe, Gene, Clifford, Richard, David, Willard Bealor and Sandra (Bealor) Parker; and Everett, Lloyd, James, Margie, Margorie Cuskaden; as well as Ron Smith, father of Ron’a and Rita.

Sue’s dream to continue her education was realized after she had raised her children. She went to college as an adult and pursed her lifelong desire to become a nurse. She, initially, completed her Licensed Practical Nurse graduating with honors, then continued her education by earning an associate degree, and becoming a Registered Nurse.  Her strong managerial and leadership skills were recognized by her promotions to charge nurse positions as well as House Supervisor.

She was a member of the Community Congregational Church where she shared her lovely voice singing in the choir.  She also performed in community theater. She had many hobbies which included entertaining, bowling, golfing, tennis, swimming, jack knife dives, water skiing and going to the casino. She loved to play many board games. She especially enjoyed playing scrabble and euchre, with family and friends.

Cremation has taken place. Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
