Sammie T. Groves

Mr. Sammie T. Groves, 73, of S. Sheridan Ave., South Bend, IN, departed this life in the arms of Jesus on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Hospice House, with his loving wife, Dorothy, by his side, after an extended illness.

Mr. Groves was born on December 6, 1944 to the union of the late Tommie Groves, Sr. and Clara (Guyton) Groves in Lowndes County, Alabama. Mr. Groves was united in holy matrimony on Saturday, December 21, 1968 to Dorothy Kelley (Groves). He remained faithful and dedicated to his wife until his death.

In 1957, Mr. Groves and his family moved from Millport, Alabama to South Bend, Indiana. He received his formal education at Central High School in South Bend. Mr. Groves confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior in October 1972 and was baptized by Reverend Booker T. West. He remained a faithful member at St. Paul Bethel Missionary Baptist Church until his health began to fail.

He was employed by Lock-Joint Tubing in South Bend until his retirement in August 2010. Mr. Groves loved the blues, oldies but goodies and Western films. He cherished the time spent with family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish and share memories of him include his loving wife of 49 years, Dorothy Groves; two sons: Keith (LaTonia) Groves and Steve Sherrod, both of South Bend; one brother, Anderson (LuVerta) Groves of South Bend. The Lord had truly blessed Mr. Groves with four grandchildren: Kyara Groves of Indianapolis, Justin Groves of South Bend, Shant (Quantessa) Looney of South Bend and Steve (Toni) Meridy of Benton Harbor; as well as eight great-grandchildren who all adored and admired him; as well as a host of other relatives and friends who will dearly miss him.

Mr. Groves was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie Groves, Sr. and Clara (Guyton) Groves; six brothers: Marvin, Robert, J.D., Charlie Earl, Tommie, Jr., and Jerome Groves; three sisters: Artesia Davis, Bernice Riles and Betty Jean Groves.

The family would like the thanks the medical staff at South Bend Clinic, Memorial Hospital and the Hospice House for their caring and compassionate service.  

Services for Mr. Groves will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2018 at St. Paul Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 621 Lindsey Street, South Bend. Friends may call on the family for visitation for one hour prior to service at the church. Palmer Funeral Homes - West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
