Sao Nen, age 79, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Saturday May 2, 2026 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN. She was born on August 20, 1946, in Battambang, Cambodia, and lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and love for her family and community.
Sao carried with her the strength and grace of her Cambodian heritage throughout her life. After coming to the United States, she made her home in Indiana and became a familiar and valued presence through her work in food service at the University of Notre Dame. She approached her work with dedication and humility, and those who knew her remember her as a dependable and caring woman who gave of herself freely in all that she did.
Family was at the center of Sao’s life, and she treasured every moment spent with those she loved. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Leb of South Bend, IN, and LeLem Leb and her husband, Kendrick Young, of Houston, Texas; her son, Chea (Holly) Leb of Clarksville, IN; her grandchildren, Liyah Leb and Leo Leb; her sister, Suon Nen of South Bend, IN; her niece, Elena (Sothon) Chea of South Bend; and her great-nieces, Jisaya Young and Thavy Chea. She found great joy in being surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren, whose presence brought light and happiness to her days.
Sao was known for the simple pleasures that made her life rich and meaningful. She loved dancing to old pre-war Cambodian songs, and music often brought out her joyful spirit. She also enjoyed playing games on her phone, cooking, and sewing, all of which reflected her patient and creative nature. Whether she was preparing a meal, sharing time with loved ones, or enjoying a quiet moment at home, she did so with warmth and care.
Her gentle heart and generous spirit touched the lives of many, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were blessed to know her. Though she will be deeply missed, her life stands as a lasting example of devotion, resilience, and love.
