Sarah Mueller Obituary

Sarah Ann Mueller, 83, residing in Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, passed away at 6:36 am Tuesday, September 7, 2021, in her home with family by her side. Sarah Ann was born August 2, 1938, in Centralia, IL to the late Anthony J. and Catherine E. (Carney) Holthaus.
 
On November 18, 1961, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Decatur, IL, Sarah married Dr. Thomas J. Mueller, who survives. In addition to her loving husband of 59 years, she is survived by daughters, Monica (Steve Largent) Laidig of Mishawaka and Ann Marie (Eric) Baumgartner of Milwaukee, WI; sons, Mark (Liz) Mueller of Queen Creek, AZ, Matthew (Diane) Mueller of Tampa, FL and James (Kellye Mitros) Mueller of South Bend; and nine grandchildren, Ava Marie Laidig, Ben and Brad Largent, Megan, Luke and Emma Baumgartner, and David, John, and Clara Mueller, as well as two great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Brockway of California; and a sister-in-law, Margarite Mueller of Jacksonville, FL. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Noah Thomas Laidig; her brother, Thomas Holthaus; brother-in-law, John W. Mueller and her parents.
 
The Mueller’s are long-time residents of South Bend moving here from Decatur, IL and Manchester, CT. Sarah Ann was an elementary teacher at St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Decatur, IL prior to moving to the South Bend area. Together with her husband Tom, she raised five wonderful children. She was always so proud to say that all five of her children hold at least one degree from the University of Notre Dame. Sarah Ann also enjoyed singing in several choirs and playing bridge, achieving Life Master with the American Bridge Association.
Sarah Ann lived her best life bringing joy and smiles to everyone she met. She was beautiful inside and out, and she will continue to shine on through her family and many friends.
 
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Graveside services and burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
 
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Sarah Ann may be donated to YWCA North Central Indiana, 1102 Fellows Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
