Sefik Tucek

Sefik Tucek, 90, passed away on July 11, 2026, at his home in South Bend, Indiana. Sefik was born in Banja Luka, Bosnia. After completing vocational school, he became an exceptionally skilled carpenter and cabinet maker. He served as a supervisor in a furniture factory and was widely respected for his craftsmanship, privately renovating and decorating many well-known establishments throughout his hometown.

In 1958, he proudly served in the Yugoslav Army (JNA) as part of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF I) in Egypt - one of the UN's first international peacekeeping missions.

During the Bosnian War, Sefik and his family were forced to leave their homeland, first immigrating to Germany before settling in Indiana in 1996. There, he continued doing what he loved as a cabinetmaker. Even without speaking English, he read cabinetry plans with remarkable precision, earning the respect of everyone who worked alongside him. He retired in 2005.

Sefik believed there was always a better way to do things. If something needed fixing, he was the first to lend a hand. His perfectionism, occasional stubborn streak, strong work ethic, and generosity became hallmarks of his character. Alongside those traits was a remarkably gentle soul, one that shone brightest in the love and patience he showed to children and animals.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Muharem and Sefika Tucek; his brothers, Kemal, Agan, and Omer; and his wife of 44 years, Kristina. Undoubtedly there to welcome him as well is Baylie, our beloved family dog who spent much of her time at his side.

He leaves behind his daughter, Jasminka Brechtl of South Bend; his son, Ramiro (Snjezana) Skaro of Florida; his close cousin, Fikret Tucek and his wife Dinka; his cherished grandchildren, Andrea (Seth) Rems, Jelena (Trevor) Soots, Gordan (Nina) Skaro, and Marija Skaro; and nine great-grandchildren. His Muslim faith quietly guided him throughout his life, and he held close the traditions and values that remained a part of his identity.

He will be remembered for his resilience, craftsmanship, and unwavering love for his family, especially his grandchildren. To us, he was simply Dido, a title he carried with immense pride and love. He will be deeply missed and forever loved. Given how much he loved fixing things, he probably would have had a few suggestions for this tribute, too.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 1:00-2:00p.m., at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46614. A private burial will follow the visitation at Southlawn Cemetery.
