Senola S. “Nora” Batteast, 86, died Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Wellbrooke of South Bend with family at her bedside.
Nora was born in Sikeston, MO, April 25, 1932. She grew up in Chicago's Morgan Park neighborhood and was a debutante and socialite. She earned an Associate's Degree from Roosevelt College and was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Company.
She married the love of her life, Robert V. Batteast, Sr. in October of 1967.
Nora was well-loved by all and believed in loving her neighbor. Her passions were serving others, golfing, theatre, and St. Augustine Catholic Church. She was a past Board Member of the YWCA Women's Shelter, performed with South Bend Civic Theatre, was an avid member of Par Putters, and founded St. Augustine's Theatre Troupe.
Nora was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Esther Smith; her husband, Robert V. Batteast, Sr.; son, Robert V. Batteast, Jr.; granddaughter, Christina Fleming; and daughter-in-law, Verna “Bonnie” Batteast. She is survived by sons, Ronald (Patricia) Batteast and James Batteast; a daughter, Valerie Batteast; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Batteast; seven (7) grandchildren; five (5) great-grandchildren; a special cousin, Francine Henley; and a host of family, friends, and pets.
Friends may visit from 4-7pm on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Palmer Funeral Home - West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend. Visitation will also be 10-11am on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at St. Augustine's Parish, 1501 W. Washington St., South Bend. Mass begins at 11am.
