Shirley Louise (Griffen) Goodhew

Shirley Louise Goodhew, 94, of South Bend, IN passed away in her home on November 28, 2022.  She was born on April 27, 1928 in Three Oaks, MI to the late Arthur Griffen Sr. and Edna (Meyers) Griffen.

On February 13, 1954 Shirley Married Wallace Goodhew at the Edwardsburg First Presbyterian Church.  He preceded her in death.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Kenneth Goodhew (Kathy) of Boulder, CO, Phillip Goodhew (Mary) of Union, MI, and Thomas Goodhew (Renee) of Eugene, OR; 10 grandchildren, Becky Vroom, Sarah Glover (Alex), Laura, Nicole, Shauna, Lisa, Joe, John, Mary, and Abby; two great-grandchildren, Silas and Hank. Her siblings; Katherine (Rob) Hall of Dowagiac, MI; Margaret (James) Coffee of Spring Hill, MI; James (Patricia) Griffen of Pleasanton, CA; Edward Griffen of Metamora, IN; Richard (Susan) Griffen of Elkhart, IN.  Along with her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Isabel Miller and brother Arthur Griffen Jr.

Shirley, a graduate of Edwardsburg High School, earned a Bachelor of Science from Western Michigan College in 1950. After her graduation she moved to South Bend and worked as a dietitian for Helthwin Hospital and later for the Brandywine, MI. school system.  She also taught Home Economics at South Bend middle schools.  She volunteered at Memorial Hospital and served on the auxiliary board for six years, resigning in 2004 as the auxiliary board president.  When asked why she took on such a large responsibility as a volunteer, she said “I love giving back to the community”.

She loved the beach and the water and lived on Indiana Lake for many years.  Hobbies included baking bread, sewing, gardening and creating stain glass windows.  She enjoyed travel, but also loved to curl up with a good book.  She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved nothing more than spending time with her family.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 5th in the Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Friends may visit with family one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest at Five Points Cemetery in Edwardsburg, MI next to her parents.
