Shirley Nutting-Eady Obituary

Shirley Mae Nutting-Eady, a resident of the South Bend community, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on February 22, 2024 at the age of 99.  She was born on April 24, 1924, to the late George Albert Hogue and Lua Ella (Harrison) Hogue.

Shirley’s life was a testament to her resilience, intelligence, wit and unwavering commitment to her faith and family. Her journey through life was marked by love.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Russell Nutting, with whom she shared almost 50 treasured years of marriage.  In her later years, Shirley joined the late Robert Eady in marriage for six years.

She was preceded in death by her brother Earl Hogue, sister Bonneta Decker, daughter Diana Lynn Heighn, and grandson Steven Andrew Harvey.  Shirley’s memory will forever be cherished by her grandson William Clede (Rebecca) Harvey and granddaughter Julie Ann (Kasey) Harvey.  She also leaves behind seven, great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

Shirley served as the administrative assistant to the Dean of the Notre Dame Law School, where she put to use her outstanding organizational skills.  She also served on the board of the local First Church of Christ Scientist.  Socially, she met with several friends once a month for luncheon and sisterhood. Shirley was an avid reader.  She kept her mind sharp by reading several books a week and by playing board and card games.  She was a kindhearted woman who always supported organizations that held special places in her heart, including the Center for the Homeless and St. Jude Hospital.  Her memory will be forever cherished by the people she touched.

A visitation will be held at Palmer Funeral Home Hickey Chapel on Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 4pm to 7pm and Friday, March 1, 2024 from 9am to 10am with the funeral service immediately following.  The interment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens following the service.

For memorial contributions, the family has designated the Center for Hospice Care, 506 W South Street, South Bend and the Center for the Homeless, 813 S Michigan Street, South Bend.
