Stephen J. Walker, known to friends and family as Steve, passed away on December 3, 2025, in Niles, Michigan, at the age of 71. Born on February 12, 1954, in Louisville, Kentucky, Steve was a kind-hearted man, known for his caring nature and his deep-rooted love for music and faith.
Steve's journey through life was marked by his commitment to his loved ones and his craft. He grew up in the care of his parents, the late James and Betty (Koontz) Walker, whose values and love shaped him into the man we all admired. His educational path was forged at St. Joseph High School, where he graduated before dedicating his career to industrial engineering in manufacturing. His analytical mind and attention to detail made him not only exceptional at his work but also highly respected by his peers and colleagues.
In 2007, Steve joined hearts with his beloved Edna (Northern) Walker in Mishawaka, Indiana. Together, they created a life full of laughter, compassion, and shared purposes. His familial legacy continued to flourish with the joys brought by his daughter, Sarah Lottes; his sons, Kevin (Sarah) Coffman and Curtis Loging III; and his daughter like niece Dawnielle (Mark) Leland. Each of his children embodied the warmth and integrity their father exuded. Steve is also survived by many grandchildren; his mother in law, Barbara Marley; his sisters in law; his brothers in law; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, and close friends.
His love for music, especially singing gospel music, resonated in his role as a song leader at Twin City Baptist Church in Mishawaka. His was a voice that not only carried melodies but also the spirit of worship, uplifting all who heard him. You could also occasionally catch him casting a pole into a nearby river or lake hoping to catch that next big fish.
A man of faith, Steve's beliefs were evident in his daily living; he possessed a gentleness of spirit and strength of character that inspired many. He cherished moments strumming his guitar, an extension of his soulful expression and his unwavering ability to connect with others through his music.
Throughout his life, Steve maintained a profound compassion for animals – particularly his dogs: Vinny, Brandi, and Rita. Each of these beloved pets found a special place in Steve's heart, reflecting the unconditional love he had for all of God's creatures.
