Susan Clerou Obituary

Susan C. Clerou of South Bend, IN, passed away on Monday morning, March 18, 2019. She was born in Bakersfield, CA, to the late Harold Dye and the late Marguerite Jeanne (Killion) Wood. Susan is survived by her loving husband of nearly 45 years, John L. Clerou; daughter, Angela Clerou-Huey; son-in-law, Chris Huey; granddaughter, Evelyn Clerou of Ojai, CA; sister-in-law, Jeanette Echenique of Bakersfield, CA; sister, Sheryl Muir; and niece, Jennifer Muir of Hemet, CA. Her brother, Douglas L. Dye, preceded her in death. Susan’s family and many, many friends… especially her chosen family, the Widmans, will miss her love, laughter and wit.

Susan was a talented artist who enjoyed working in multiple media. In 1991, she graduated from Indiana University South Bend with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her honors thesis project was handmade paper in collage. Many pieces of Susan’s art hang throughout her home. At Christmas, Susan created beautiful cards for family and friends with original designs and using techniques that amazed everyone. She loved her flower garden and yard. Susan’s photography collection included stunning sunsets, vivid flowering plants and landscapes, and beautiful animals and birds.

Susan had an unbounded curiosity about people and life. She was interested in all aspects of life. Susan had a lifelong love of books and reading. She always had a book to read and share with friends. Her favorite read was a really good murder mystery. Susan enjoyed cooking. Sharing a good meal and a good bottle of wine with friends and family was a perfect way to spend an evening.

Susan loved to golf. Her approach to golf was like her approach to everything she loved – total immersion. She made golf fun for others in her foursome. Susan worked at the pro shop at the University of Notre Dame Warren Golf Course. Her ready smile and spirit welcomed golfers and new friends for over 17 years.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Drs. Richard Wein, Charbel Maskiny, Matthew F. Koscielski, and Ismail Al-Ani as well as their staff, the wonderful nurses and PCAs at Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Tom Sweeney, nurses and caregivers at Heartland Hospice for the caring assistance and aid given to our beloved, Susan.

Susan’s life will be celebrated by friends and family in both South Bend, IN and Bakersfield, CA at a later date. Her ashes will be interred at Bakersfield National Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel is assisting the family.

John and Angela request that any memorials made in memory of Susan be donated to Heartland Hospice, 230 W. Catalpa Drive, Suite D, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
