Terry Heckman Obituary

Terry G. Heckman, a beloved family man, dedicated employee, and respected community member, passed away peacefully at home in South Bend, IN, on December 12, 2025, at the age of 85. Born in South Bend on October 9, 1940, to John and Katherine (Daurer) Heckman, Terry grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. Though he would eventually bid farewell to many of his siblings – Marjorie, Doris, Beverly, Shirley, Sharon, Clifford, Carl, Carroll, Calvin, Cloyd, and Clem – their shared memories continued to light his life.

Terry's commitment to his country was evident through his service with the United States Air Force, during which he achieved his GED, showcasing his determination and adaptability. After serving his country with distinction, Terry brought his strong work ethic to Nipsco, where he dedicated over three decades of his life as a skilled mechanic. His relentless drive also led him to Hamilton Towing, where he managed to juggle a part-time job alongside his full-time commitment.

Terry was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Mary (Wahl) Heckman, whom he married on April 13, 1979. They shared 14 years of marriage until her passing in 1993; her memory remained a beacon of love in his heart. Terry was also preceded by his first wife and mother of his children Susan (Tittler) Heckman. He leaves behind his cherished children, Traci, Teri Sue, and Brent Heckman, while carrying the memories of his departed daughter, Tami, and son, Brian. His legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren – Trisha (Jason), Bryan, Jacqueline (Will), Courtney, and his dear great-grandchildren - Connor, Kylee, Kayden, Dakota, Jaden, Dominic, Jace, and Leah.

As a proud United States Air Force Veteran, Terry understood the importance of service, continued through his nine years of volunteer work with the St. Joseph County Sheriff Department and membership with the St. Joseph County Sheriff Posse. His dedication to helping others was also reflected in his involvement with Reins of Life and as a member of Legion 357 riders.

Terry found joy in the simple pleasures of life – from the roar of his first motorcycle, a 1973 Electra Glide, to the quiet mornings spent with his livestock and in his garden. The love he had for his family was unparalleled and will forever be remembered in every bloom, in the laughter of his grandchildren, and in the stories shared amongst those who knew him best.
