Vernon C. Linback of South Bend, IN passed away peacefully, with his family beside him, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN on December 28, 2025. He was born on December 14, 1932 in Benton County, IN to Clarence K. and Cleo L. (Cover) Linback. Vernon married Lulu Lucas on August 18, 1956, and she was at his side to the last.
Vernon proudly served his country in the Air Force. He worked for IBM for over 30 years where he was given high accolades for his outstanding job skills. He was generous with his time and talent, being the Mr. Fix-it for the family and friends he loved so much.
Vernon was an active member of Northway Church of Christ, where he was a strong example of Christian love.
He is survived by his loving wife “Lu” Linback, their daughters Deniese Haughee, Mishawaka, IN and Julie A. (Kevin) Trethewey, South Bend, IN and their sons Micheal J. (Diann) Linback, and Kenneth R. (Yvette) Linback both of Niles, MI. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, a sister, Lillie Spencer, Logansport, IN and two brothers; John (Dixie) Linback, Walkerton, IN and Thomas (Marlene) Linback, Logansport, IN. He is proceeded by his parents and by eight brothers and sisters.
A funeral service for Vernon will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, January 10, 2025 at Palmer Funeral Homes, Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd. South Bend, IN 46635. Visitation will be held from 11am-1pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
