Richard "Dick" Scheibelhut Obituary

Richard “Dick” Scheibelhut, residing at The Pendle Home of South Bend, IN, passed away Friday, May 7, 2021, at the age of 87 with his children at his side. He was born on October 31, 1933 in South Bend, IN to the late Leo C. and Dorothy (DeBelius) Scheibelhut.

In May 1961, in Chicago, IL, Dick married Jean Louise Kreuzer, who preceded him in death on September 1, 2019 after 58 years of marriage.

Dick graduated from Notre Dame in 1955. A Navy ROTC graduate, he promptly began his Navy service becoming a Chief Engineer and Landing Officer on a Fast Attack Transport in the Mediterranean.  Dick went onto test the waters at several different career paths until he discovered his love for accounting. He rose through the ranks at KPMG and ended his 29-year career as Director of Accounting and Finance of KPMG.

Throughout his life he was an avid fisherman and bridge player with Jean. Dick was recognized as Ruby Life Master by the American Contract Bridge Club.  Most recently playing with the South Bend Bridge Club in Mishawaka.

Dick is survived by his son Leo R. Scheibelhut of Duluth MN, his daughter Judy (Cory) Stepanek of Oceanside CA and South Bend IN, three grandchildren, Kaitlin, Ian and Avera Scheibelhut of Duluth MN; his beloved sister, Katherine Brothers of South Bend, IN; brother, John (Carolyn) Scheibelhut of Notre Dame, IN; brother-in-law Otto (AnneMarie) Kreuzer of Kalamazoo, MI, grand dogs, Bogie and Monty Stepanek; and 10 nieces and nephews and many more grand nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife, Jean, Dick was preceded in death by his sister, Rosemarie Jurgonski.

Mass of Christian Burial for Dick will be held at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame Campus on Monday May 17, 2021 to start promptly at 3:30pm.                                       

Following the mass, an interment will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana.
