Eldon "Al" A. Candler

SOUTH BEND – Eldon A. “Al” Candler, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Butcher, Business Owner and Pet Lover passed away on Friday, September 4, 2015, after a long illness.

Al is survived by his daughters, Diane (Michael) Welihan, Linda Candler, both of South Bend, Joni Candler of Dallas, TX; grandsons, Brice Elder of Austin, TX and Benjamin Welihan of South Bend IN; his sisters, Darlene (Jim) Purlee from Granger and Deanna Nusbaum of Mishawaka.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Gwendolyn (Deerwester) and Arden Candler; and two brothers, Gaylord and Eugene.

Al moved to South Bend as a teenager and always called it home.  He is the former owner of Al’s Butcher Block, Hickory Farms, North Village Mall, the Down Under and Hospitality Broker of Florida and the Caribbean.  Al loved business and being a butcher.

Later in life, Al became a supporter of dog rescuing, a passion he shared with his daughter Linda.  Al was always happy to help in a rescue in any way he could, often holding and caring for the dogs.

Al’s family is grateful for the staff of Heartland Hospice and Ironwood Medical.  Their kindness will always be appreciated by the family. 

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services.
