Carla L. Beres passed away on September 22, 2016 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. She was born to George and Helen Beres in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Carla is survived by her brother, Michael Beres; sister, Angeline Hartman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She had a special place in her heart for her great nephew, Logan.

Carla graduated from St. Joseph High School, St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Wayne and Indiana University, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Carla dedicated her career to caring for infants and children as a public health nurse and consultant. She was a public health nurse for Hennepin County Health Department in Minneapolis as well as the St. Joseph County Health Department in South Bend. She worked for 40 years at the Children With Special Health Care Needs Program as the regional nursing consultant in northern Indiana. After retirement, she worked for the WIC program and gave countless hours of her time as a volunteer for Christ Child, the Children’s Immunization Program, Coordinator for SuperShots, advisor and board member of the Spina Bifida Association, March of Dimes and the Memorial Hospital Community Enhancement Program. She taught sewing classes at the Sew Loved Program and BABE store, where she donated dozens of her handmade boppy pillows. Carla belonged to the Indiana State Nurses Association, Indiana Public Health Association, Indiana Immunization Coalition and Quilter’s Club of America. She was a master at creative sewing, quilting, cooking, gardening and baking (she was renowned for her famous kieflies and kolach at Christmas time). She traveled the world and enjoyed visits to her relatives in Canada and in the states.

Carla was a true guardian angel, who had a deep faith and selflessly shared her gifts for life and love with anyone who crossed her path. Carla was a blessing to us all, and she will be greatly missed.
