Dewitt Bowie

Dewitt Joseph Bowie, age 59, lifetime South Bend resident, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 13th in his home. He was born on December 11, 1957 to the late General Gray and Mary Esther (Phillips) Gray.

He was educated by the South Bend Community School Corporation and went on to devote many years to cultivating his talents in painting and landscaping. Dewitt spent many years of companionship with Bernadine Johnson, who survives. Dewitt is also survived by sister Cynthia D. (Charles) Stokes of South Bend and six nieces and nephews: Decarlo Stewart, Jeanna (J.R.) Forney, Anthony Ford, Shalon (Steven) McClatchey, Shameka Bowie and Aubry Gray, as well as several great nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by parents General Gray and Mary Esther (Phillips) Gray as well as his brothers and one sister

Services for Dewitt will take place on Thursday, October 19 at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church 1620 S. St. Joseph St., South Bend at 12:00 pm, Rev. Rickardo Taylor officiating. Friends may call starting at 11:00 am on October 19 at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church prior to the service. Palmer Funeral Home - West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
