Homer Sampson

October 3, 1923 ~ December 3, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Homer Sampson, 93, of Granger, IN passed away at 6:05 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.  He was born on October 3, 1923 in Griffith, IN to the late Ross and Muriel (Todd) Sampson.  On May 7, 1950 in Griffith, IN, he married the former Thelma Porter who preceded him in death in June 1976. On June 27, 1980 in Indiana, he married Dorothy M. (Hawkins) Sampson who preceded him in death on November 1, 2016.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Paul Sampson and James Sampson.
 
Homer is survived by his children, Peggy (Greg) Gatewood of Louisville, KY, Edith (Dennis) Gerdes of Mishawaka, IN and Rodger (Ellen) Sampson of Buchanan, MI; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren.
 
Homer was a lifelong Northwestern Indiana resident.  He served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II.  Homer retired in 1984 as a conductor with The E.J. & E. Railroad after forty-five years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Hobart V.F.W.; a member of the Railroad Union where he served as an officer and was a Deacon of Griffith Baptist Church.  
 
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 11:00am at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN.  Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 4:00pm-8:00pm at the funeral home.   Interment will take place at a later date at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN
