“The mountains are calling and I must go.” – John Muir

Randy C. Highland was called home beyond the mountains and over the Rainbow Bridge he always dreamed of , bound for a new adventure on April 27th. Randy dedicated his life to his one true passion, animal rescue. He risked his life every day as an Animal Control Officer for the City of South Bend. His passion for animal welfare extended into his personal life as he became a certified FIR team member for the ASPCA and rescued 3 of the things he loved most in all the world, his four legged children Ami, 7, Salchicha, 1, and Kevin, 4. Besides his incredible love for animals, Randy shared an equally amazing passion for the wilderness and America’s National Park Service. If Randy wasn’t around animals, he was hiking mountains and trails, breathing in the fresh air of open spaces. He and his wife had one day hoped to follow in the footsteps of his hero, John Muir, and hike the John Muir Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Appalachian Trail with their animals. They one day hoped to make both the Great Smoky Mountains and Yosemite their homes. Randy was also an avid lover of skateboarding and punk rock music.

On August 3rd, 2012 he married the love of his life, Michelle (Nowak) Highland who survives him in death. Along with his loving parents, Richard and Kathaleen (Watkins) Highland, loving sister Tabetha Highland and adoring niece Aalyssa Zebell and amazing nephew Isaac Burks,  brother Robby Highland, and niece Leah Highland.

Visitation for Randy will be from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. followed by a short memorial from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 4th, 2016 at Palmer Funeral Home, Guisinger Chapel 3718 South Michigan St., South Bend.
