Robert Kirkwood

Robert Kirkwood, 71, parted this life, after battling cancer, at 12:30pm on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Healthwin Specialized Care in South Bend. He was born on December 19, 1945 in North Carrollton, MS, to the late James Herring and Virginia Kirkwood. In 1972, Robert moved to Chicago, IL, where he met and married Rose Harris, his wife of thirty years. In 2004, he moved to South Bend

Robert retired from Associate Trucking line after sixteen years of service. He was also employed at Bonier and Auto for many years. Robert enjoyed watching old cowboy movies, fishing, listening to the blues, and cooking—his specialty was roast and greens. He attended Faith Apostolic Ministries in South Bend.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his step-father, Ivery Cross, and siblings Lodean Fox, William Cross, and Angela Cross. He leaves to cherish his memories, five children, Marcia Kirkwood of North Carrollton, MS; Robert Jevel Kirkwood of Muskegon, MI; Tarnisha Nicole Kirkwood, Anita (Larry) Hardimon, Alicia Le’Nae Kirkwood, all of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, Marqueze Branch, Larry Hardimon, Camren Kirkwood, Brandon Ross; one great-grandchild, Emmilya; six sisters, Kathy (George) Jackson, Jean Cross, Jeanette (Ronald) Peterson, Sherri (Sahr) Harris Ngombu, all of South Bend; Nancy (Robert) Harris of Bloomington, IN; Brenda (Thomas) Herring of Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, Ivery (Mary) Cross, Jr., and Gary (April) Cross, both of Niles, MI; sisters-in-law, Ruthie Cross, Georgia Harris, Martha (Puddin) and James GoMiller, Tommie (Heartattack) Hearn, Pastor Leroy Shack, Britin Waltz, and a host of relatives and friends. A special thank-you is extended to Edithe Harris-Daniel.

Funeral services for Robert will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Palmer Funeral Homes—West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN 46628. Bishop Eddie Miller will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00-1:00pm prior to the service on Thursday, February 23 at the funeral home.
