Rosemary Christine (Hardig) Shafer

Rosemary Christine Shafer, 89, lifelong South Bend resident, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Tuesday morning, July 18, 2017 at Hospice House of South Bend. She was born January 4, 1928 in South Bend to the late Eugene J. and Rosemary P. (Higgins) Hardig.
 
On April 23, 1949 in South Bend, Rosemary married Frederick Charles Shafer, who preceded her in death on August 2, 2008 after 59 years of marriage.
 
Rosemary is survived by daughters, Kathryn M. (Mark) Rawie of Lenexa, KS, Nancy A. (David) Pinson of Dallas, TX and Mary Patricia (Mike Bradley) Shafer of South Bend; sons, James (Kathleen Gilroy) Shafer of Eau Claire, MI, Edward Shafer of Milwaukee and Christopher (Karessa Simone) Shafer of Hobart, IN; grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Chase, Erin Corbett, Andrea Roark, Leslie Pinson and Ryan, Linsey, Ian, Cameron and Nathan Shafer; and nine great grandchildren; as well as three brothers, James Hardig of South Bend, Edward Hardig of Granger and Eugene Hardig, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC; and two brothers-in-law, John Shafer of Granger and Joseph Shafer of South Bend. Rosemary was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Shafer Hyden, and her husband, Steve Hyden; a grandson, Tyler Shafer; and a great grandson, James Roark.
 
In addition to enjoying the role of homemaker and caregiver, Rosemary was an active member with the Christ Child Society, Junior League, Service Guild of South Bend and Corpus Christi and Holy Cross Catholic Churches. She was also active with the South Bend Duplicate Bridge Club, St. Mary’s Alumni Club and Elbel Golf Course.
 
After Fred’s retirement, they traveled the country and abroad visiting family and friends and spent every winter in Destin, Florida.  She was a passionate master duplicate bridge player.  Up until her death, Rosie enjoyed spending time with family and friends, Saturday morning breakfasts at the Farmer’s Market, playing bridge and Notre Dame Football.  We will always remember her loving and inclusive disposition, warm sense of humor and unending love for her family.
 
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday, July 21, 2017 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2822 Corpus Christi Dr., South Bend, IN 46628. Burial will take place privately at a later date in Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, July 20, 2017 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 pm, as well as one hour prior to mass on Friday in the church.
