Robert J. Pate
January 13, 1947 ~ March 2, 2013

Robert Joseph Pate, 66, of Osceola, IN, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday evening March 2, 2013, due to complications from cancer. He was born on January 13, 1947, in Lebanon, OH, to the late Dorothy Pate Manuwal and Charles Pate. On August 26, 1967 in South Bend, he married Rita M. Hillebrand, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Rita; Bob is survived by their two children, Rachelle (Ray) Morris, and Mark (Donna) Pate, both of Granger; and six grandchildren, Derek and Drew Morris, and Kailey, Allyssa, Reganne, and Joey Pate.  He also leaves behind his precious family, Larry and Dianna Hillebrand, Carl and Mackie Clark, Helen Robinson, and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

He was a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Riley High School in 1966 and attended CBC in Springfield, MO, where he sang in Revival Time Choir. He worked in sales for many years prior to retiring from Frito Lay in 2005.

Bob grew up attending Calvary Temple Church in South Bend. He loved gospel music and sang with many groups within the church.  He took every opportunity to attend a gospel sing at the Morris Civic and any other southern gospel concert.  He blessed many with his beautiful voice and is now singing his praises in Heaven.

This August, he would have celebrated 46 years of marriage to Rita, the love of his life. He was blessed with a wonderful family, whom he loved, cherished and prayed for daily. He loved to attend his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events.

Funeral services for Bob will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, March 7, 2013 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Rev. Jeff Bullard officiating.  Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 - 7:00 pm Wednesday, March 6, 2013 in the funeral home as well as one hour prior to services on Thursday in the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Bob may be donated to Freedom Life Missions, 991 E. Greenville Pike, Winchester, IN  47304. Online condolences may be left for the Pate family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.

It saddens me that he left us at such a young age. He loved his Uncle Carl, it seems when I would talk to him he always would tell me what his Uncle was doing in Texas. I know he loved the Lord, & I know we well all see him someday in heaven. I will be praying for you all during this time, that the Lord will comfort you all.
Your Brother in Christ, Craig

I will always remember Bobby Joe with a smile on his face and making everyone laugh. As a child he was always that man that was teasing the kids and having fun with them. After not seeing him for many years, he was still the same man teasing my girls. My husband Michael expressed how much fun he was. His smile will be missed and never forgotten.

Much love,
Leslie

Rita our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family during this time of Bob's homegoing. We remember the fun times we had with Bob as a young man, visiting at the Berens home on Elder Street. He was a special person to us. He was dearly loved by his Uncle Carl and all his family. We will continue to keep you in our prayers. Love, Richard and Elaine Bruntz

Rita, Dianne, Larry, and family,
Bob has a special place in our memories as do you all. He was a wonderful person with a big heart. He loved life and loved his family and friends. Most of all, he loved God and is celebrating with music that we are all unfamiliar with. We are praying for you! Eddie and Sharon Hawks

Mark,
I am so sorry to hear about your father. I had a nice conversation with him at a book-signing a few years ago. My prayers are with you, your family, and your father at this time.

To think of Bobby Jo always makes me smile. Bobby Jo was a good friend of my older siblings during my childhood years at Calvary Temple. I remember his fun personality and love of life. I can only imagine the joyous reunion taking place with his parents Dorothy and Arnold Manual, and his grandparents William and Lydia Clark. I can hear Grandma Clark's enthusiastic words: "Well for evermore!"

My Deepest Sympathy to Rita and Family.

With Love and Fond Memories Always,

Errett has passed along the sad news, bringing back many memories from our time in South Bend (1968-1974). We remember Bob, and know that you must miss him very much, Rita. Please accept our condolences. We wish we could attend the visitation and service. Our prayers are with you.

I know right now
It’s hard to understand
Just what lies ahead
And what is God’s plan
We ask ourselves
Many questions why
Is He still involved
And cares about our lives?
We ask ‘Where is love’
When we’re in need,
When we’re in the midst
Of a tragedy?
But we can rest, assured
That He is with us
Every step of the way
With compassionate love.
Although I know that no words can ease the loss you feel, just know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
