I just learned of Dr. Poinsatte's passing from the Saint Mary's Courier. I was a student of his (class of '75), and although his classes were demanding, I found the literature he assigned eye opening. He took an interest in my work - I was trying to write a historical novel about Virginia City, Nevada, and he tried hard to help me get a grant from SMC to go to Virginia City. It didn't work out, but his enthusiasm and support meant a great deal to me. I did make it there a year later. I wish I had maintained contact, but I thought of him so often - and my Virginia City novel, "Who Have the Power," was finally published to good reviews in 2006 - much different from the original idea after much research and revising. The picture here of him is so right. It is how I remember him (especially after he'd give a hefty reading assignment!) I also wish I'd known he'd started a Women's Studies program - that scholarship was just starting up when I was at Saint Mary's. I remember him and will continue remembering him as one of the bright lights in my life. I extend my condolences to the family.

Professor Poinsatte was a wonderful professor and a great person. All in all, he probably had the most influence on me of any professor at Saint Mary's. I am sorry for your loss. I will always be grateful for the influence he had on my life.

This wonderful teacher anchors so much of my St. Mary's experience. It was a privilege to have him as a teacher and someone who inspired me to pursue further work in teaching and in American Studies. Blessings and prayers for you all.

As a history major at SMC (class of 1990) I was fortunate to have many classes with Dr. Poinsatte. He was tough, fair, and oh so knowledgable. I have such fond memories of him, and his sense of humor. He was a blessing to his students, one, even we could recognize as young, inexperienced college students.
