Dr. Melissa R. Zimmer, 32, residing in South Bend, passed away peacefully at 5:25 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011 in her home, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 24, 1979 in South Bend, a daughter of Andrew & Lisa (Gaugler) Zimmer. She has remained a lifelong resident of the Elkhart-South Bend area.
Melissa graduated with a BS in Chemistry & Biology from the University of Indianapolis, and her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine. She served her residency at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, and has served the Elkhart-Goshen communities at Family Medicine Center on Reith Blvd. in Goshen for the past three years.
Dr. Zimmer is survived by her parents, Andrew & Lisa Zimmer of Weatherford, TX; three sisters, Ashley & Grace Zimmer, both of Elkhart, Victoria Zimmer of South Bend, two brothers, Adam Zimmer of South Bend, and Michael (Kristin) Zimmer of South Bend. Also surviving is her maternal grandmother, Mary Gaugler of Edwardsburg, MI, and her paternal grandfather, William "Bill" Zimmer of South Bend. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Ann Zimmer, October 19, 2007, and her paternal grandfather, Richard Gaugler on April 11, 2010.
Melissa was a member of Osceola United Methodist Church.
Services celebrating the life of Melissa Zimmer will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 9, at the Osceola United Methodist Church. The family invites you to wear Melissa’s favorite color, purple. Rev. Robert Vale will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend.
