Dear Shelly and Cindy,
When Joan called me this week, I was saddened that my laughing, happy cousin, who gave me some sound motherly advice, had passed.
In this picture, I see her mother's hair and her grandmother, Ida Jones Davis facial features. What a similarity!
Her positive outlook, persistence and happy perspective no matter what life sent her way, are traits we all wish we had.
I may be in Maryland, but the distance shrank when we talked on the phone. She was so level headed. She gave me perspective on many significant life issues we shared.
My parents loved Joan and Carol. They were devastated when their Mother, Dorothy died and stayed in touch. I remember coming to VA as a little girl and your Mom was all excited about high school graduation. I saw her then as I did throughout her life as someone to aspire to imitate.
She told me she felt like the movie "Cheaper by the Dozen", when she married Mr. Turner! She told me about the Christmases, how many pounds of potatoes she could peel at ND, the ND golf course, sent my kids sweatshirts and ski hats from ND! So Many stories and laughs we shared. By the way, my kids LOVED them...some still fit! They wore those items like they were geniuses and would actually have a shot at admission to ND! Always good to have goals!
She shared my interest in family research. We had a blast, while in the Manassas Library Bull Run Genealogy section! We could have spent a weekend doing that, but I think Joan would have fallen a sleep! My son, Shawn was about 12 and entertaining my daughter, Beth about 6, so we dreamt of another time to research our family history. Thanks to another cousin, Walter Davis's daughter, Alyssa, that genealogy interest continues. More family has been found and far more ancestry info found back to Jolly Ol England and the 1500s !
While your hearts truly ache, I want you to know that her Mother, Dorothy and my parents, Lois (maiden name Davis) & Jim Norton welcomed her to heaven with the biggest hug.
She will always be with me in my heart as I am sure she will be in yours.
Love,
Sharon, Dennis, Shawn and Beth Kennedy
