Dr. Hofman was the most affable and dear professor . He is the reason I became a physician. His lessons extended far beyond the classroom.
I think of you often, Dr Hofman, and know you are walking with the Angels.
Your memories are a blessing.

Emil was a friend, colleague and a Giant of an educator. He directed the Gravy Train while I was a graduate student at ND that helped graduates financially by grading papers. He is a legend and one who stands with the giants who made ND a great University. God Bless you Emil and my sympathy to Joan and the Boys.

I had the great pleasure of suffering through Dr. Hofman's Introductory Chemistry class as a freshman in 1973. I somehow survived, went on to get a PhD in Astrophysics, and now I am a professor myself. Every week I take pride in administering a seven question quiz in my introductory physics and astronomy classes. I know that my students will be forced to learn the subject with the same thoroughness that I had to for Chemistry - all those years ago. (I still remember many more details from that chemistry course than any other course I ever took!)

My prayers are with his family and I know it is a small conciliation for the loss of such a great man… but you should know that Emil lives on in the lives of all of us who were made better by having known him.

I have many fond memories of Dr. Hofman ("Emil T"), who dominated my freshman year activities vis a vis the dreaded Friday morning inorganic chemistry quizzes. More importantly I distinctly remember Dr. Hofman giving our group an impromptu lecture/pep talk late in our freshman year encouraging us to pursue our studies with vigor and telling us we could not make a difference until we "knew something about something". I also remeber him interrupting our first semester final exam in december of 1975 to give us the news that Ara Paraseghian had announced his retirement as head football coach. God Rest Dr. Emil T Hofman.

I was warned that "Emil T's" chem course was tough. No, it was good and he inspired me to get an A. He has been a presence and continued inspiration for me ever since. I mourn his death and celebrate his well lived life.

In the 43 years since my time as a freshman, Dean Emil T has played a pivotal part in my recollections and appreciation for Notre Dame.
His role as author and professor of the legendary freshman chemistry course was one of reverence, fear and survival prompting even an informal editing to the words of the Our Father’s prayer with which his 10:10 AM class was always started.
His role as Dean of the Freshman Year of studies was one of kindness and mentorship. After a very sobering year as an engineering major, the results of my performance in his Chemistry course made it evident that a change was in order. On academic probation, I came back to campus to consult with him and he cared for my solitary predicament as though no other existed and after numerous discussions, suggested that I visit the architecture department.
From probation to the dean’s list in one semester, I had, indeed found my direction and experienced the caring that Notre Dame and Emil chose as the hallmark for all that they accepted: one where all efforts were devoted to support, encouragement and love. That approach has formed a student body that is sent into the world very well equipped to survive with the fittest.
My sympathies to his family and to all of us lucky enough to have known him and been touched by his brilliance and warmth.

One of the true measures of greatness is the number of lives that are touched by mentorship, guidance, and compassion. Dr. Hofman has indeed touched thousands of lives. On a more personal note, Dr. Hofman has been one of the most inspirational figures in my life--I will always cherish everything he did for our family over many years. Dr. Hofman will be missed, but not forgotten.
Our prayers are with his family.

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I have never forgotten, nor will I ever forget, the many kindnesses that Dean Hofman extended to me at Notre Dame. He took me under his wing, getting me through that first year of freshman Chemistry and homesickness, self-doubt and uncertainty. I have been blessed to have had such an extraordinary teacher and mentor. May he rest in peace.

Professor Hoffman was feared and loved. In freshman chemistry, I remember him throwing out a student and told him never to return, for talking during his lecture. Another time a pesky fly bothered him so much when he was doing overhead slides he walked out! We even had a streaker run across the stage, but he kept on like nothing had happened.
In those days the Texas Instruments Calculator was the latest technology. He allowed us to use them for that famous Friday 7-question quiz. What he didn't know was that the calculator could handle up to a seven digit number then fade. All you had to do was put the correct 1,2,3, or 4 answer in each slot, pass to the next person who would bring the numbers back up. Of course, I was way too afraid I'd get caught so never did that.
He was also the most lovely, caring professor in Freshman Year of Studies and counseled me that science wasn't in my future, but I will never forget the impact he made on me. God rest his soul.

My condolences to all the family and friends of Dr Hoffman. I was one of many who feared his weekly Emil T's. Yet, his course made me proficient in chemistry and left me with the sense of confidence I needed to become a physician. In later years I learned when my daughter was attending ND that a nice retired professor would talk with her and even took her and some of her dorm mates out for a meal. This "nice professor" was the same Dr Hoffman who had me so apprehensive every Friday years earlier . He will be missed by many and will be in my prayers.

I will always affectionately remember the great Emil T. Hoffman. The transition from high school to undergraduate studies was daunting, and he certainly made that transition as smooth as possible for all of us. What an amazing man and someone who left his mark at ND and mankind. He will be sadly but fondly missed.

Dear Joan, Tom and Family,
I was deeply saddened when Sheila and Neil shared the news with me yesterday. Those of us who grew up at Notre Dame were so very lucky to have known Dr Hoffman: a man of truly high calibre and intellect - very much his own man. All of the Murphys send our prayers for your beautiful family. May God bless Emil T.

Two summers ago on a sunny June day, I was on campus and saw Emil sitting on his very famous office bench. I thought to myself that I would stop and talk for a few minutes to keep him company. After two hours of talking about many topics, personal and not, I realized what a huge gift he had given to me that afternoon. He was still the consummate instructor, sharing life's challenges and shedding light on what really matters most in life. He blessed the Notre Dame Community with his intellect, his humor, his devotion and his grace. A life well lived...........

My sincerest condolences go out to the wonderful Hofman family. I graduated from ND in 1987. I feared and respected Dr Hofman as a student and revered him as an Alum. For me he will always be one if the most iconic ND figures. I am so glad that he encouraged me to join him on one of his reconnaissance trips to Haiti three years ago. It was Dr Hofman's last trip. My daughter Isabella (now a rising sophomore at ND) joined me and got to spend some quality time with this great man. He was joined by several of his family members on this trip. He treated us like part of his family. I will never forget how welcoming and gracious he and his family were to us. We even joined in celebrating his 91st birthday in Haiti! Last month, Isabella and I returned to Haiti, this time on a medical mission, with my 16 year old daughter Angela. We joined other ND physicians and families who have been similarly encouraged by the great Dr Hofman. May the good Lord forever bless Dr Hofman and his family. Thank you for the positive influence that you have had on me and my children and your legions of previous students and alumni.

I was never a bright enough student to take Emil T's course but I shared a floor of women who were. The subdued nature of Thursday night as they all prepared for one of Emil's notorious quizzes consumed the tone of the dorm. The professions that each of these bright young women went on to proved to be living examples of excellence in Emil's ability to teach and to care about what came next. Rest in peace dear man. Well done in your abundant gifts of education to so many.

Dear Joan:

It is with great sadness and affection that I write to you to share my favorite memory of Emil with you. As a Freshman in 1973, I was taken under Emil's wing and so enjoyed our "lunch dates" together. He was so genuine and straightforward, two traits that are essential in dealing with college freshmen.
He and my father, Eric Yuhl, MD, shared a special bond and I know they are reunited in heaven. Emil was a man of integrity and honesty.

My prayers will be with you and your family.

I was one of the class of 1977 PreProfessional Science majors at ND. I remember Thursday nights studying for "Emils" and begin terrorized by "Double Emils." I remember going to the Grotto to pray for intervention when studying did not seem sufficient. Mostly, I remember that Emil was often also at the Grotto. I like to think he was praying for us. Together, we made it.
