Seeing this broke my heart. Mr. Eggleston was one of my most favorite and thought about teachers. I wish I would have known. I'm sorry for your loss. <3

Gene was a true friend. I will miss him. Gene and I had many conversations about South Bend Schools-oh boy the hours. Gene was a man who you could trust. I had him at my home
many times and we had fun. Gene had your back and that is rare today. Gene was very
very passionate which made people feel uneasy because Gene went the extra mile.
Above all Gene cared about kids- he yelled a lot but that was Gene's way.

Just saw the obituary today as I was out of town in Tennessee for a week. My deepest sympathy to Jim, Sam, Ralph and their wives!
I knew Gene from growing up and graduating from Jimtown High School. I also worked with Gene as a football coaches' unpaid-helper, and "another set of eyes" as Gene called it with his freshman team in 2002-2003 at Riley High School-- specifically assisting with special needs students. I didn't always agree with Coach Gene, but I respected him and knew he knew the game of football and loved helping students learn in the classroom, as well as, on the football field. Gene often helped young adults find their purpose in life.

So sorry to hear about Gene's passing. I only heard he was ill about 2 weeks ago. Just saw the obit today, and I'm so sorry I couldn't be at the funeral home.

I will also miss my neighbor and buddy Gene. I enjoyed listening to Gene's stories, complaints, and advise. I didn't mind one bit helping him fix little things around his house, or fixing Annie's run, I will miss that. Our neighborhood was, believe it or not, a better place when he was around, if something was wrong or needed to be straightened out, he was on it! Gene would stand up for what he believed was right like no other. Rest in peace Gene

Very sad to hear our backyard neighbor was called home to be with our lord. I will miss our talks at the back of the fence. And Gene was so good with the kids. He would stand there and engage the kids in conversation. 2 or 3 times he gave my youngest stepdaughter candy bars to sale and make her a little money.
Living behind Gene for the last 5 years I came to know a man that had a caring heart. He spent his life as an educator, on the football field and in the classroom. Im at a loss for words as Gene had a way that would grow on you. I will definitely miss my feisty neighbor. I now wish I would of went and spent the day with him in Michigan City. My wife would go and check on Gene and get caught up in conversation with him. We would check on our buddy Gene. We look in his back yard and our heart strings pull. Gene is definitely missed in my household. He left an indelible impression on this household where only Gene could.
Im very happy I Had the pleasure in knowing Gene. I offer my deepest condolences to his family. I will definitely be there Saturday to pay my respects...sad day..,.
Respectfully,
Bobby and DeRhonda Walters
