Beloved - I'd love to play the yangqin (my version of it at least) as a memorial to your dad and in appreciation of great times in your basement. My sympathies with the loss of your dad and the respect he bequeathed to all of us.

Beloved professor and friend. Thank you for being such a fantastic, highly intelligent, quietly sophisticated person, Dr. Mao. He will always mean a great deal to me.

Dear Richard and Helen,
It was a special privilege to know Jeff as a colleague and friend. His extraordinary life experiences, fine mind and concern for people greatly enriched the quality of education experienced by his many students.

Dear Richard and Helen,
Colleen and I have been privileged to know Jeff and Mona since 1968, when they welcomed us to Wittenberg (with a spaghetti dinner!) We are happy that he spent his final years with you. One of my best memories is the visit with them and the other political science faculty to China.
Those who knew Jeff well could appreciate both his kind and gentle manner, and the strong personality and intelligence behind it. He was a wonderful colleague and friend.

Dr Mao was my advisor at Wittenberg in the late 60s. What an honor to know such a brilliant and gracious person. After a single class there was no question that I would major in political science. I am completing my career as a lawyer, and I believe Dr Mao and Wittenberg prepared me well for Law school and a life in the Law.

Dear Richard and Helen, It was my pleasure to get to know your father as a person and patient . what a nice man, gentleman, and accomplished person he was. You both should be proud of him, as well as what you did to make his latter life comfortable and full. Hope you both are well.

Many years ago I met Jeff and I was inspired by him, with his kindness, and soft spoken words of so much knowledge. Truly a wonderful man that I had the privilege to meet. I also knew his wife; Mona, as we both worked at the same Company. I loved Jeff and Mona and pray for the family to find peace.

I remember Dr. Mao during his tenure at Wittenberg University. He was one of the nicest, most gentle men I've ever met. His courtly manners and quiet demeanor were very much in evidence and he never treated staff members any differently than he treated faculty. He would bring his class in to see movies in the Audio Visual Theatre and he often used our editing room to copy VHS tapes of the Chinese New Year celebrations. I miss seeing him and wish to send my condolences to his son and daughter-in-law. He will be missed.

Dr. Mao was my freshman advisor at Wittenberg in the late 70's. He would remain my advisor throughout my time at Witt, and as a senior I was his freshman counselor, assisting him with his new students. He was a very kind man, amazingly smart, and I've always had a soft spot in my heart for him. When I struggled as a senior to pass my PoliSci exam for graduation, he went out of his way to help coach me and give me the opportunity to succeed. Whenever I think of my time at Wittenberg I always think of him. My thoughts and prayers go to his family.

Mr. Mao always had a smile and gentle words when I saw him at Rich and Helen's house for my lessons. He had a quiet, confident dignity and warmth that radiated to anyone that had the pleasure of talking to him. It is often said that the true measure of a man can be found in his children. Mr. Mao exceeded any such measure for the manner in which he raised Rich to be the gentleman we all know, admire, respect and have the honor to call a friend. My thoughts and prayers to Rich and Helen.

Oh, how I'll miss him. Jeff was a teacher par excellence, a wonderful colleague and friend. He was brilliant--but he was so much more than that. Rarely have I known a more gentle man, or a man with a more delightful sense of humor. He was, in the best Confucian sense of the word, a sage. My heart goes out to you, Richard and Helen.
