I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Bob's family. He was a wonderful friend and mentor to me in my four stays at Mellon Institute and helped me enormously especially at the beginning of my scientific career. The Mellon radiation lab was an exciting place to do research thanks to Bob. Further he and Florence were very hospitable to me and others in the lab; I enjoyed many dinners and fun evenings at their home.

Dr Schuler helped establish the research exchange between US and China relationship starting in the 80s. We Chinese students are forever indebted to Dr Schuler for his compassion and mentoring at the Notre Dame Radiation Lab. Dr Schuler will be deeply missed.
