John Raymond Chenoweth

John Raymond Chenoweth, 83, of Mishawaka, IN passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Memorial Hospital.  John was born on June 5, 1933 to the late Lorene (Stricler) Chenoweth.  On August 13, 1960, at the 1st Presbyterian Church in South Bend,  he married Sharon (Noe) Chenoweth,  who survives.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years; his daughters, Sherry (Richard) Oswalt and Michele (Michael) Personette, both of Mishawaka, IN; his son, Timothy Chenoweth of Kimmell, IN; nine grandchildren,  Richard (Tia) Oswalt, Adam Gosa, Timothy Oswalt, Alexander Oswalt, Kyle (Leah) Personette, Kristin Personette, Kandyss (Matt) Higginbotham, Karri Personette and Kelsie Personnette; seven great-grandchildren, Caison, Jastin, Addison, Zoey, Jayce, Declan and Alaska; and his sister, Maxine Blye of South Bend.  John was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Ashyr Ray and his brothers, Donald Chenoweth and Richard "Dick" Chenoweth. 

John was a beloved teacher of Social Studies and of students with learning disabilities.  Many of his students remained lifelong friends.  His love of teaching led him to volunteer with Lovability Ministry.  He was a widely-praised substitute teacher and later drove a school bus.  Earlier, he worked at the Bendix Corporation in the Missile Test Lab.  After retirement, he worked in maintenance at the South Bend Public Library.  He was a member of the Michiana Male Chorus.  He began singing with the Riley High School Chorus and enjoyed the monthly meetings with the Riley High School Reunion Committee.  HIs lifelong love of music continued in the Air Force with the Kimpo Choraliers in Korea.  He sang with the First Christian Church of South Bend Chorus, the Bendix Male Chorus, the Elks Male Chorus and was the president of the Great Lakes District Male Chorus Association.   He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 360 and the American Legion Post 303, both in Mishawaka. 

Services for John will be held Monday, January 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at River Valley Church, 55855 Bittersweet Road, Mishawaka, IN.  Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and again an hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.  Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.  Palmer Funeral Home - Guisinger Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
